Melbourne - Herald Sun; Circus Oz Big Top rises on banks of the Yarra

5th June 2014

WINTER descended on Melbourne like clockwork this week and Circus Oz seems to have provided the rain dance.

The sight of the big top rising up through the drizzly grey has become another of the city’s winter rituals.

The company this week began its annual erection of the tent next to the riverbank at Birrarung Marr in preparation for its four-week season of new work But Wait ... There’s More, which opens on June 18.

It takes 28 people one week to raise the tent and another week to set up the show within it. The tent stands 22.6m tall and the canvas alone weighs six tonne.

The Melbourne-based circus troupe premieres every new show in the big top before embarking on a national and international tour.

A 12-week regional tour will follow the Melbourne season, after which the company is hoping to make its first trip to China.

Since its first international tour in 1980, Circus Oz has performed to more than 3.5 million people in 26 countries. This year the company went to Arnhem Land, the United States and Canada.
