The Melba Spiegeltent - HeraldSun; Best of Melbourne: What’s on for Cup weekend

31st October 2014

FLIPPING THE SCRIPT BLACK FELLA STYLE

If you call yourself Circus Oz you better be acknowledging the traditional landowners of the land Down Under.

Thankfully, Circus Oz not only embraces the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander story, it actively encourages performances that subvert what we know and think about this nation’s original people, often making us do a policy backflip in our minds.

The Circus Oz BLAKflip program has grown from the first masterclass in early 2012 to feature nine deadly participants from across Australia, including Baykali Ganambarr, Shiralee Hood, Ally Humphris, Letina Hutchinson, Mia Robinson, Elsie Smith, Tibian Wyles, Mark Sheppard (left, pretty in pink cuffs) and musician James Henry composing for Corked Up! This show will have mad aerials, saucy burlesque and note-perfect comedy all hurled onto the stage of the Melba Spiegeltent, in the round. Beware, Sheppard may “accidentally” flick you with his pigtails.
