Sydney, Australia - Central Sydney Magazine; Clowning Around Circus oz is back in town
9th December 2015
There's always a joker in the pack - and in the world-renowned Circus Oz troupe, Olivia Porter is everybody's fool.
The multi-talented juggler, clown, acrobat and dancer is used to playing "the idiot role" - but always with a twist.
"My drive is always to push the originality of what I'm doing and really communicate with the audience," Porter said.
Whether it's an emotional response, or whether they just experience pure joy and entertainment, that's what I'm after."
After 12 months of touring around Australia and the US, Circus Oz is bringing its spectacular new show But Wait... There's More to Sydney.
"It's a very fun show, very quirky and silly but also highly skilled with some really beautiful and hilarious moments," Porter said, adding Circus Oz was not always what people might expect from the circus.
"The shows always have a really strong political and social message... It's not what a lot of people might imagine when they think about a traditional circus," she said.
"It's not just about the skill but the spectacle. My drive is about adding layers through a persona."
Porter, who began taking workshops after she had left high school, said that even after many years in the industry, she still gets butterflies before taking the stage.
"I can be such a nervous performer, sometimes before a show I think, 'On my god, why did I choose a career that is so terrifying?'. But, I love doing what I do."
