Circus Oz undertook a three-week tour of regional areas of Victoria, which included a weeklong stay in three separate locations. This project enabled communities in regional areas without access to a suitable performing arts centre to experience the spectacle of a show of scale. We hosted a community performance of the Circus Oz show in each location we visit.
In 2016, will visited North-Western Victoria and the towns of:
- Sea Lake
In addition to the community performances we conducted participatory circus skills workshops for younger people held at local schools. In a creative and safe place the participants focused on improving physical strength, balance and coordination, increasing their mental resilience and confidence, learning new skills and trust building with others.
A 2013 Regional Arts Australia study reported over 85% of respondents believed that the arts play a vital role in community wellbeing. However, this survey also showed that 95% of respondents agreed there were barriers to engaging in the arts in regional areas. This tour will provide the opportunity for diverse cultural communities to come together through the highly accessible artform of circus.
Financial investment in this program will allow us to reach more areas of regional Victoria and sustain this project into the future.
Stay tuned for 2017 touring locations.
