Shows At The Melba
24 January - 28 November
A Slam which doesn't just benefit the winner of the competition but the whole community and artists within in.
A slam which follows leading founder Marc Smith’s Slam Papi Philosophy committed to the growth and vitality of a poetry slam format “for the people, by the people.”
A slam powerful and loud enough to bring together the various poetry communities dispersed across Melbourne: a united poetic community where all poets are welcomed, supported and honoured. Page poets, rappers, story weavers, sound makers, slam champions, new on the scene? All teachers, all equal, all totes glorious. Naive? Who said a slam can’t dream.
A place where team slamming is facilitated and central to our practice. Where connections between poets in cities across Australia will be born and strengthened, a gift from one city to another, contributing to the development of a wider national community.
A slam where poets at varying levels in their careers have the opportunity to score a feature spot, where new and established voices can be heard, where this gift is passed freely to newcomers.
A breeding ground where musical and interdisciplinary collaboration with poetry is encouraged. Featuring a Jam Slam section where slammers who sign up on the night improv with musicians live on stage. Guest Performers from other artistic genres will collide, teach and entertain a poetic audience.
Poets who recognise that our place in Australian literary history has emerged from a plurality of universal oral traditions re-interpreted by poets in various disciplines, communities and localities creating what is now known as “Remix Culture.”
